Imagine the zesty, savory taste of your favorite pizza, but wrapped in tender lasagna noodles and baked to cheesy perfection. It’s truly a dream come true for anyone who appreciates great food!

This recipe transforms traditional lasagna into individual, portable rolls, making serving a breeze and ensuring everyone gets a perfect portion. It’s an excellent choice for family dinners, potlucks, or even meal prepping for the week. The magic lies in the blend of a rich, homemade pizza sauce and a creamy, cheesy filling, all rolled up with savory pepperoni. Let’s dive into how you can bring this comforting, flavorful dish to your table.

The Secret to Success: Crafting the Perfect Homemade Pizza Sauce

While convenience often calls for store-bought sauces, the true heart of these Pizza Lasagna Rolls lies in their homemade pizza sauce. Preparing your own sauce from scratch not only elevates the flavor profile but also gives you complete control over the ingredients, allowing for a healthier and more personalized touch. Don’t be intimidated; this sauce is surprisingly simple to make and requires minimal hands-on time, mostly just simmering to develop its robust flavors.

For best results and to streamline your cooking process on a busy weeknight, we highly recommend making the sauce a day or two in advance. This allows the flavors to deepen and meld beautifully, enhancing the overall taste of your lasagna rolls. Our homemade pizza sauce is also incredibly versatile – it’s fantastic on classic pizzas, as a dip for breadsticks, or slathered on sub sandwiches. However, if time is truly a constraint, a high-quality jar of marinara or pizza sauce can be a convenient substitute without sacrificing too much flavor. Just ensure it’s a brand you love!

Effortless Planning: The Make-Ahead Magic of Lasagna Rolls

At first glance, the idea of assembling lasagna rolls might seem a bit intricate. However, one of the most brilliant aspects of this recipe is its adaptability to advance preparation. This feature makes it an ideal candidate for those looking to enjoy a wholesome, homemade meal on a busy schedule without the last-minute stress. Picture this: you simmer the rich, aromatic sauce on a relaxing Saturday afternoon, then on Sunday, you dedicate a short while to assembling the rolls. By Monday evening, you have an incredible, ready-to-bake dinner waiting for you.

This strategic approach means that after a long day at work, a fun playdate, or whatever your Monday might entail, all you need to do is pop the prepared dish into the oven. The convenience of having a delicious, homemade meal with minimal effort during the week is truly invaluable. This make-ahead capability ensures that even on your busiest days, a flavorful, satisfying, and family-approved dinner is just an oven away, transforming ordinary weeknights into extraordinary culinary experiences.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Own Pizza Lasagna Rolls

Creating these delightful pizza lasagna rolls is a rewarding experience, broken down into simple, manageable steps. Follow this guide to ensure perfect results every time.

Mastering the Homemade Pizza Sauce

Begin by heating a touch of olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan. Add finely diced onions and sauté them gently over medium-low heat until they become translucent and tender, releasing their sweet aroma. Next, stir in the minced garlic, cooking for just about a minute until fragrant – be careful not to burn it! Pour in your canned diced tomatoes, add the rich tomato paste, and season generously with dried basil, oregano, a pinch of sugar to balance the acidity, and red pepper flakes for a subtle kick. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for at least 15 minutes, allowing all the flavors to deepen and marry beautifully. A slightly ajar lid will prevent spatters while still allowing steam to escape.

Because diced tomatoes can be quite chunky, for a truly authentic pizza sauce texture, we recommend puréeing it. An immersion blender is your best friend here, as it allows you to blend directly in the saucepan, minimizing extra dishes. If you don’t have one, a standard blender or food processor will also work wonders. Always exercise caution when puréeing hot liquids to avoid splashes, and an apron is highly recommended!

Cooking Tip: Sauce Shortcuts for Busy Days

Short on time or prefer a smoother sauce without the blending? Here are a couple of handy shortcuts: For a smoother texture from scratch, simply substitute a 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes for the diced tomatoes – their naturally finer consistency means no puréeing is needed. Alternatively, for ultimate convenience, feel free to use a jar of your favorite store-bought marinara or pizza sauce. You’ll need about 2 cups for this recipe.

Preparing the Rich Cheese Filling

Next, it’s time to create the creamy, indulgent cheese filling that will bind our rolls together. In a large mixing bowl, lightly beat a large egg. This helps to bind the cheese mixture and prevents it from becoming too crumbly. Add the creamy part-skim ricotta cheese, a generous amount of shredded mozzarella, and the sharp, salty grated Parmesan cheese. Finally, stir in the fresh or dried parsley, and a dash of ground black pepper. Mix all these ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined and uniform. The combination of these cheeses creates a perfect balance of texture and flavor, essential for a truly satisfying lasagna roll.

Assembling Your Lasagna Rolls

Before you begin assembling, lightly spray your chosen baking dish with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Then, spread a thin, even layer of about half a cup of your prepared pizza sauce across the bottom of the dish. This creates a flavorful bed for the lasagna rolls and helps keep them moist during baking. For the noodles, ensure they are cooked al dente, drained, and rinsed with cold water to prevent them from sticking together. Lay them flat on a clean surface, such as wax paper, to prepare for filling.

Take one cooked lasagna noodle and spread an even layer of your delicious cheese filling over its entire surface, leaving a small border at the edges. Generously top the cheese with slices of pepperoni – feel free to arrange 5 to 6 slices per noodle for maximum pizza flavor. For an extra boost of nutrition or different flavor profiles, consider adding a sprinkle of fresh spinach, finely diced bell peppers, or sautéed mushrooms at this stage. Carefully roll the noodle up, starting from one of the shorter ends, creating a tight spiral. Place the rolled noodle seam-side down in your prepared baking dish. Repeat this process with each remaining lasagna noodle until your dish is beautifully filled with these savory rolls.

Once all your lasagna rolls are nestled in the baking dish, it’s time for the final touches. Spoon the remaining delicious homemade pizza sauce generously over the tops of the filled rolls, ensuring each one is coated in savory goodness. This extra layer of sauce will keep the rolls moist and infuse them with even more delightful pizza flavor as they bake. Then, for that irresistible golden-brown crust and gooey texture, generously sprinkle additional shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese over the entire casserole. This top layer of cheese will melt into a bubbly, golden crust that is simply divine.

Baking to Golden Perfection and Serving

Place your beautifully assembled lasagna casserole in a preheated oven. Bake it until the rolls are thoroughly heated through, the cheese on top is melted and a tempting golden brown, and the sauce is bubbling around the edges. This typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes, with the last 10-15 minutes uncovered to allow the cheese to get nice and crispy. The aroma filling your kitchen will be absolutely irresistible!

If you’re preparing these lasagna rolls for a future meal, whether it’s for tomorrow’s dinner or to freeze for later, do not bake them at this stage. Simply cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and refrigerate it. For freezing, wrap it in an additional layer of plastic wrap before foiling to prevent freezer burn. This preparation makes them an ideal candidate for healthy meal planning!

Cooling and Serving Your Masterpiece

Once your lasagna rolls emerge from the oven, resist the urge to immediately dive in! It’s crucial to let the casserole rest for about 10 to 15 minutes before serving. This resting period allows the piping hot cheese and sauce to settle, and the noodles will absorb a bit more of the delicious sauce, making the rolls firmer and much easier to scoop out and serve without falling apart. Garnish with some fresh parsley or basil for an added touch of color and freshness. Serve these delightful rolls with a crisp green salad and some garlic bread for a complete and utterly satisfying Italian-inspired meal.

More Lasagna Recipes and Creative Variations

If you’ve fallen in love with the comforting flavors of lasagna, there’s a whole world of variations to explore! For those days when you crave the taste of lasagna with a little less fuss, consider trying a hearty lasagna soup or a convenient one-pan skillet lasagna – both offer that classic flavor profile in a simplified format. Looking for a healthier or more adventurous spin? Lasagna zucchini boats are a fantastic low-carb alternative, while stuffed shells with meat provide another delightful way to enjoy cheesy, saucy pasta. And for a truly unique and vibrant twist, our Mexican lasagna is sure to surprise and delight your taste buds!

These pizza lasagna rolls are also incredibly versatile, inviting you to experiment with your favorite ingredients. Beyond pepperoni, consider adding crumbled Italian sausage, cooked ground beef, sliced mushrooms, black olives, or diced bell peppers to your filling for an extra layer of flavor and texture. For a vegetarian option, simply omit the pepperoni and load up on spinach, sautéed zucchini, or roasted red peppers. You can even try different cheese blends, perhaps adding some provolone or a sharp cheddar for a distinct taste. The possibilities are endless, ensuring that this recipe can be tailored to suit any palate or dietary preference.

Ingredients

For the Sauce (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ medium yellow onion, diced small
  • 1 can (28 oz.) diced tomatoes (see note)
  • 1 can (3 oz.) tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes
  • salt and pepper to taste

For the Lasagna Rolls

  • 10 traditional lasagna noodles, cooked, drained and rinsed with cold water
  • 2 cups prepared pizza sauce (use recipe above or substitute marinara sauce)
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 ¼ cups part-skim ricotta cheese
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley (or 1 tablespoon dried parsley)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 ounces sliced pepperoni (50–60 slices)

Instructions

For the Sauce (see note):

  1. In a large pan over medium-low heat, heat the butter and olive oil until the butter is melted. Add the garlic and onion and sauté until tender, about five minutes.
  2. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar, and red pepper flakes. Bring the sauce to a boil and then reduce heat to low. Place a cover on the pan, slightly ajar, to contain spatters. Simmer for 15 minutes. Taste, and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, as needed.
  3. With an immersion blender, CAREFULLY blend until sauce has desired texture. If you prefer really smooth sauce, use a regular blender.
  4. Store the sauce in fridge unless using immediately. It makes more than is needed for this recipe. Refrigerate or freeze extras.

For the Lasagna Rolls:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Cook noodles according to directions on package. Drain and rinse with cold water and lay the cooked noodles on sheets of wax paper so they don’t stick together.
  2. Spray a baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and spread ½ cup of pizza sauce on the bottom of the pan. Set aside.
  3. Meanwhile, prepare filling in a large bowl by mixing beaten egg, ricotta cheese, 1 cup mozzarella, ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, parsley, and black pepper until well combined.
  4. To prepare lasagna rolls, lay out one lasagna noodle and spread it with about 2 tablespoons of cheese filling. Arrange 5 to 6 pepperoni on top of cheese filling. Roll up each noodle starting at the short end. Place in prepared baking dish, seam side down. Repeat until all noodles have been filed and rolled.
  5. Pour 1 ½ cups pizza sauce over the rolls and top with ½ cup mozzarella cheese and ¼ cup Parmesan cheese.
  6. Cover baking dish with foil and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, removing foil for last 10 to 15 minutes, or until rolls are hot and cheese is melted. Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes prior to serving.

Notes

  • Sauce shortcuts: You can use a jar of marinara or pizza sauce instead of making your own sauce. You’ll need 2 cups of sauce. If you prefer to make your own sauce, but want to skip the puréeing step, substitute crushed tomatoes (28 oz. can) for the diced tomatoes.
  • Make ahead: Prepare the casserole. Cover with foil and refrigerate up to a day in advance. It can be frozen for up to one month. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before baking. Bake as directed.
