Recipe Overview
Why you’ll love it: These mini crab cakes are golden and crisp on the outside with a tender center. A bright, garlicky lemon aioli finishes them perfectly. They work equally well as an appetizer, a light lunch, or a party snack.
How long it takes: 35 minutes
Equipment you’ll need: mixing bowls, large nonstick skillet
Yield: 12 to 14 mini crab cakes

No One Is Crabby When They’re Eating Crab Cakes
These mini crab cakes disappear fast at gatherings. If guests don’t have a shellfish allergy, expect them to come back for seconds. The recipe stays intentionally simple so the delicate crab flavor shines through: Dijon, Old Bay, fresh parsley, and lemon are all you need.
Making them mini has practical benefits: they cook quickly, flip easily without falling apart, and are simpler to serve than full-size crab cakes.
What makes them special:
- Crispy outside, tender inside: Golden edges and a soft center give the ideal contrast.
- Easy to cook: Smaller patties mean more consistent results with less fussing.
- Lemon aioli (don’t skip it): Creamy and bright, the aioli pulls the whole dish together.
Ingredient Notes
The full ingredient list is in the recipe card below. Quick highlights:
- Lump crab meat: Use lump crab for texture and visible pieces of crab. Pick carefully for shells. Imitation crab is not recommended here.
- Binders: Panko, egg, and mayonnaise keep the crab cakes moist and help them hold together.
- Flavor builders: Dijon, lemon juice and zest, parsley, Old Bay, salt, and pepper add classic crab cake flavor. Zest the lemon before juicing — you’ll use both.
- Lemon aioli: Made with mayonnaise, garlic, lemon zest and juice, and salt. It brightens the crab cakes and is delicious on other dishes, too.
How to Make Mini Crab Cakes
Make the lemon aioli. Combine mayonnaise, minced garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, and a pinch of kosher salt in a small bowl. Refrigerate while you prepare the crab cakes — the flavors meld as it rests.

Combine crab cake ingredients. In a medium bowl, gently mix lump crab meat, panko, lightly beaten egg, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, chopped parsley, Old Bay, kosher salt, and coarse ground black pepper. Stir just enough to combine — don’t overmix so the crab stays in chunks.
Form the patties. Shape the mixture into small 1½-inch patties using about 1½ tablespoons per cake. You should get roughly 12 to 14 mini crab cakes.
Cook until golden. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook half the crab cakes in a single layer for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden and crisp. If the pan gets crowded, cook in batches and add more oil as needed. Medium heat helps them cook through without burning the exterior.

Serve. Plate the crab cakes warm and top each with a small dollop (about 1/2 teaspoon) of lemon aioli and a sprinkle of finely chopped parsley.

Serving Tips
- Portions: Serve one mini crab cake per person as part of a larger spread, or plan 2–3 per person if they’re the main dish.
- Best hot: Serve shortly after cooking so the exterior is crisp and the center is tender.
- Prep ahead: Form the patties in advance and refrigerate the uncooked cakes until ready to fry. The aioli can be made ahead as well.
Serving Ideas
As an appetizer: Offer alongside other finger foods and fresh vegetables for a crowd-pleasing spread.
As a main course: Serve a few crab cakes over a simple green salad with a lemon vinaigrette, or build a grain bowl with greens, avocado, and roasted vegetables.
In a sandwich: Make larger patties and serve on a toasted brioche bun with lemon aioli or tartar sauce, lettuce, and tomato.

Storage & Reheating
Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Reheat: Rewarm in a dry nonstick skillet over medium-low heat until heated through and crisp. Alternatively, reheat in an air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes until warmed and crispy.

Mini Crab Cakes with Lemon Aioli

Ingredients
For Lemon Aioli
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 1 small garlic clove (finely minced)
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice (zest the lemon first)
- ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt
For Crab Cakes
- 8 ounces lump crab meat (picked over for shells)
- ½ cup panko bread crumbs
- 1 large egg (lightly beaten)
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
- 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
Instructions
-
Make the lemon aioli: in a small bowl, stir together ¼ cup mayonnaise, 1 small minced garlic clove, 1 teaspoon lemon zest, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, and ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt. Refrigerate until ready to use.
-
For the crab cakes: gently combine 8 ounces lump crab meat, ½ cup panko, 1 lightly beaten large egg, 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, 1 teaspoon Old Bay, ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, and ¼ teaspoon coarse ground black pepper. Mix just until combined.
-
Form the mixture into 1½-inch patties (about 1½ tablespoons each). You should have about 12 to 14 mini crab cakes.
-
Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook the crab cakes in batches, 2–3 minutes per side, until golden and crisp. Add more oil as needed and repeat with the remaining cakes.
-
Serve warm with a small spoonful of lemon aioli and a sprinkle of chopped parsley.
Notes
- Cooking tip: Medium heat prevents the outside from browning too quickly so the centers cook through.
- Make ahead: Shape patties ahead of time and refrigerate uncooked cakes until you’re ready to fry. The aioli can be made in advance as well.
- Crab cake sandwich: Divide the mixture into four portions for larger cakes, cook a bit longer, and serve on a toasted bun with aioli, lettuce, and tomato.
- Storage & reheating: Refrigerate leftovers up to 3 days. Reheat in a dry skillet over medium-low heat or in an air fryer at 350°F until warmed and crisp.
