Some people have a big sweet tooth, but we crave salty snacks (umm, hi there, popcorn addiction). We're completely helpless around a bowl of French onion dip and a bag of salty potato chips. We can’t keep these things in our house because we have no self-control around them.

When many of you requested that we create a from-scratch onion soup mix recipe and this from-scratch French onion dip, we knew we had to get right on it!

From-scratch French Onion Dip

A little lighter. We knew that we wanted to make the dip healthier than the stuff you buy at the store, like our dill vegetable dip made with yogurt. The base of this dip is similar, mostly plain Greek yogurt. We also like to add a small amount of mayonnaise to smooth out the flavors and reduce the tanginess of the dip.

Only a few ingredients. The only other thing in the dip besides the yogurt and the mayonnaise is a couple of tablespoons of our from-scratch onion soup mix which you can make ahead and keep on hand. This dip takes only about five minutes to make.

Make it ahead. You can serve the dip right away but we've found that it’s best if you let it sit in the fridge for a couple hours to let the flavors meld together. It’s reliable for parties because you can make it ahead.

Ways to change it

Make it without mayo. You can absolutely make this French onion dip without mayonnaise. We like the way it smooths and mellows out the flavor but if you prefer, use all yogurt instead of the mix of yogurt and mayonnaise.

Add caramelized onions. Caramelized onions add so much memorable flavor! If you are as much as a fan as we are, stir a good dollop of caramelized onions into the dip and garnish the dip with another spoonful. It’s straightforward to mix your own caramelized onions.

Keeping leftovers

This from-scratch French onion dip will keep in your fridge in a sealed container for about the same amount of time as your yogurt. When you’re making this, check the date on your yogurt and use that as a guide for when to toss this out as well.

Notes

From-scratch onion soup mix: It’s straightforward to mix your own onion soup mix and it will keep in your pantry indefinitely.

Yogurt: we like to use 2% Greek yogurt in this recipe. Full-fat and fat free will also work. If you choose fat free, it might separate and have a thinner consistency than if you use full-fat. Just give it a stir before serving!

Add caramelized onions. If you’d like to add a special touch to this dip, stir in caramelized onions and/or add them as a garnish. Learn how to caramelize onions.
