Why Choose Canned Tomatoes?
Canned tomatoes are a nutritious, low-calorie, versatile, and budget-friendly option. They deliver great flavor, often surpassing the taste of fresh, out-of-season tomatoes. Canned tomatoes also have a long shelf life and are incredibly easy to use. Stock up on canned tomatoes today to be ready for your next culinary adventure!
Types of Canned Tomatoes
- Follow recipe instructions for the type of canned tomato. Canned tomatoes come in various forms, including whole, diced, stewed, sauce, puree, and paste. Always use the type specified in the recipe. Generally, different types of canned tomatoes aren’t interchangeable. For example, if a recipe calls for diced tomatoes, don’t use whole tomatoes. If the recipe calls for tomato paste, tomato sauce won’t be a good substitute.
- Opt for no-salt-added canned tomatoes. Regular canned tomatoes can have a surprising amount of sodium (220 mg per ½ cup serving of regular diced tomatoes versus 15 mg in no-salt-added). No-salt-added tomatoes offer the same great flavor without the extra sodium.
Tomato Paste Tip
If a recipe calls for a portion of a can of tomato paste (e.g., 2 tablespoons), don’t discard the rest. Divide the remaining paste into snack-sized bags, ice cube trays, or freezer cubes (2 tablespoons each) for future use. Tomato paste is also available in convenient tubes.
